What is a microchip?
A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and contains a unique code that is linked to a pet registry. This means if your pet is ever lost, a council ranger or a veterinarian can scan your pet for the microchip and access your contact details on this registry. These registries are password protected and there is an application process to have such access. So if they find themselves lost, you and your pal will be reunited before you know it!
How is a microchip implanted?
Each microchip contains an identification code unique to your pet. This tiny chip is implanted under your pet’s skin, which can be done during a normal consultation. When scanned, the unique code is displayed, so the vet or animal shelter can then refer to the relevant registry for information to identify the name, address and phone number of the owner. They may also assist where the ownership of an animal is in dispute. Microchipping your pet is compulsory in all states of Australia. Even though not mandatory in the Northern Territory, it is highly recommended to microchip your pet, especially in lieu of heavy winds and storms.
If your pet is not yet microchipped, please contact us at Pelican Waters Vet and make an appointment to have one placed. If you find a lost pet,

contact us to arrange a scan so we can reunite microchipped pets with their worried owners.
